Katy: Balancing HR Consultancy & Running Her Own Business

At The HR Booth, we’re proud to have a team of HR consultant Scotland with diverse experiences and passions. Each individual brings something unique, not just in terms of professional expertise, but also in how they approach life outside of work.

This month, we’re shining a spotlight on Katy Mitch, HR Consultant, who not only supports our clients with their HR needs but also runs her own successful cleaning business. From juggling family life to balancing the demands of two very different roles, Katy’s story is one of resilience, creativity, and following your instincts.

We sat down with Katy to find out how it all began, what a typical week looks like, and the lessons she’s learnt along the way.

You are running your own business while working as an HR consultant Scotland. How did that come about, and what made it the right path for you?

The idea hatched whilst on maternity leave with my daughter and having many a poor experience with finding reliable, high-standard cleaners for my own home. I was also at a crossroads professionally where I fancied a change outside of the Corporate world, that’s when I decided to start up on my own and use my personal experience and passion for a clean home to create something I could offer to others!

What does a typical week look like for you? How do you go about balancing both roles in practice?

The weeks take care of themselves, it’s always very full on but I am now a dab-hand of juggling the multiple plates that come with running my own business, alongside all things ‘Mum’ and everything in between!  When I’m not in The HR Booth office, I’m often found doing laundry runs for our busy family Air B&B business in Aberdour or on a football training field somewhere with my Ronaldo-loving son!

Are there any skills or lessons from running your own business that you bring into your HR work, or vice versa?

  • A passion for listening – truly caring what our clients wants and needs are, whether it’s HR needs or cleaning needs – it’s a fundamental for me!
  • Resilience – keeping calm through a storm and continuing, whatever comes your way.
  • Organisation and consistent communication.

With everything you’ve got on the go, what do you do to switch off and recharge outside of work?

I’m very rarely ‘off’ so I am sure to always soak up lots of precious family time – some good food and a cold Pinot Grigio also helps.

What would you say to someone thinking about doing something similar – either balancing two roles or stepping into something outside the typical 9–5?

I followed my heart and trusted life’s natural path and I have never looked back – it’s nice to believe in yourself. I would say to anyone keen to develop themselves, to push yourself out of a comfort zone and remember making mistakes is par for the course – that is the only real way to truly unlock your full potential and truly learn and develop.

Looking at everything you’ve achieved so far, what are you most proud of?

My family are my world and I’m so proud to have them right behind me in everything I do. To see my cleaning business flourish to what it is today is a personal highlight, as it was all done whilst having a baby who hates to sleep!
